GST Registration in Gujarat: The Complete 2026 Guide
Everything a Gujarat business owner needs to understand about GST registration — when it becomes mandatory, what documents you need, how the process actually works, and the common mistakes that get applications rejected.
What GST registration actually gives you
GST registration gives your business a GSTIN — a 15-digit number built from your state code and PAN. It is the identity that lets you legally collect GST from customers, issue proper tax invoices, and claim input tax credit on your own purchases.
Without it, you cannot charge GST, cannot claim credit, and cannot sell on marketplaces like Amazon or Flipkart. With it, you can do all three — but you also take on the duty to file returns every month or quarter.
Who needs to register
Registration becomes mandatory in several situations, not just when you cross a turnover limit:
- Traders and manufacturers with aggregate turnover above ₹40 lakh in a financial year
- Service providers with aggregate turnover above ₹20 lakh in a financial year
- Anyone selling through e-commerce operators — mandatory from the first sale, with no threshold
- Businesses making inter-state supplies of goods
- Those liable to pay tax under reverse charge, casual taxable persons, and non-resident taxable persons
Who does not need to register
It is just as important to know when you do not need GST. If you are a small trader or service provider below the threshold, sell only within Gujarat, and do not sell on e-commerce, you may not need to register at all. Businesses dealing only in exempt goods or services, and agriculturists supplying their own produce, are also generally outside the net.
We would rather tell you honestly that you do not need GST than register you into a monthly filing obligation you did not have to take on.
Documents you will need
The exact list depends on your business constitution, but for a proprietorship you typically need:
- PAN and Aadhaar of the proprietor
- A passport-size photograph
- Proof of business place — electricity bill, rent agreement, property tax receipt, or an NOC
- Bank proof — a cancelled cheque or the first page of your passbook / a bank statement
The step-by-step process
The application is filed in form GST REG-01. After the basic details, you complete Aadhaar authentication through a link from the portal. The application then goes to a GST officer. If anything is unclear, the officer issues a clarification (REG-03), which must be answered in REG-04 within the deadline. Once satisfied, the officer issues your registration certificate (REG-06) with your GSTIN.
Where Aadhaar authentication is done and no clarification is raised, GSTINs are usually issued within about seven working days. If the officer opts for physical verification of your premises, it takes longer.
Mistakes that cause rejection
- Address proof whose name does not match the owner or the rent agreement
- PAN and name mismatches
- Unclear or mismatched bank proof
- Choosing the wrong business activity or constitution
- Ignoring a REG-03 clarification until the application lapses
After you are registered
Registration is the start, not the end. A regular taxpayer must file GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B every month or quarter — even in months with no sales, where a Nil return is required. Miss them and late fees and interest accrue, and your GSTIN can eventually be suspended.
This is exactly why many businesses hand monthly filing to a practitioner: the ₹499 registration is one-time, but staying compliant month after month is the real work.
