GST Notice Reply

Got a GST notice? Don’t panic — get a proper, timely reply drafted by a practitioner.

A GST notice is not the end of the world, but ignoring it is what turns a small issue into a big one. Notices come for many reasons — non-filing, mismatches between GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B, input tax credit differences, or scrutiny of a return. We read the notice, explain exactly what it means, and draft a proper reply within the deadline.

First, don’t panic — but don’t ignore it

Most GST notices are routine and manageable. What turns a small query into a real problem is not the notice itself — it is missing the deadline. GST notices are time-bound, sometimes allowing only a few days, and an unanswered notice can escalate into a demand, a penalty, or a best-judgement assessment where the officer decides your liability without your input.

So the right response is the opposite of both panic and avoidance: send the notice to a practitioner the day you receive it, understand exactly what it wants, and reply properly and on time. That is almost always enough to close it.

The GST notices you are most likely to receive

Notices come in several standard forms, each meaning something specific:

  • GSTR-3A — a reminder that returns have not been filed; filing them promptly usually resolves it
  • ASMT-10 — scrutiny of a return, asking you to explain specific discrepancies
  • DRC-01A — an intimation of tax proposed, giving you a chance to explain or pay before a formal notice
  • DRC-01 — a formal show-cause notice proposing a tax demand
  • DRC-01C / mismatch notices — differences between the credit you claimed and your GSTR-2B, or between GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B
  • REG-17 — a show-cause notice proposing to cancel your registration
  • RFD-08 — a show-cause notice proposing to reject a refund claim
  • ADT-01 — intimation that your records have been selected for departmental audit

Why mismatch notices are so common

A large share of notices are simply mismatches the system flags automatically. The two usual culprits are a difference between your GSTR-1 (sales detail) and GSTR-3B (summary), and a difference between the input tax credit you claimed in GSTR-3B and what appears in your auto-drafted GSTR-2B. Often the underlying position is perfectly fine — a timing difference, an amendment, a supplier who filed late — and the notice just needs a clear, reconciled explanation. We reconcile the figures and either explain the difference or correct it.

What a good reply actually contains

A reply that closes a notice does three things: it answers precisely what the notice asks (not a generic letter), it backs every point with reconciliations, ledgers and documents, and it is filed within the deadline through the correct form on the portal. Vague, unsupported or late replies are what push a routine query into a demand. We draft the response with the supporting reconciliation attached, so the officer can see the position is genuine.

What happens if you ignore a GST notice

Ignoring a notice does not make it go away — it removes your chance to influence the outcome. The officer can proceed to a best-judgement assessment, confirm the proposed demand, add interest and penalty, and move to recovery, including attaching your bank account. A notice answered well is usually a non-event; a notice ignored is how businesses end up with a demand they could have avoided.

Ordinary demands vs fraud allegations

Not all demands are equal. A demand raised for an ordinary error or short payment carries lighter consequences than one alleging fraud, wilful misstatement or suppression, which carries a much higher penalty and a longer time limit. How a notice is framed — and how it is answered — genuinely affects your exposure. We read the basis of the notice carefully and respond in a way that keeps you on the right side of that line wherever the facts allow.

Send us the notice the day it arrives

Because notice deadlines are short, speed matters more here than almost anywhere else in GST. Handled under an authorised GST Practitioner (enrolment ID 242000004888GPL), we read the notice, tell you plainly how serious it is and what is at stake, and draft and file a supported reply within time — for businesses across Gujarat and India, over WhatsApp and email.

How the process works

1

Send us the notice

Share the notice as soon as you receive it — deadlines are often short.

We prepare a supported reply with the right reconciliations and documents.

4

File & follow-up

Timeline

Notices carry their own deadlines, sometimes only a few days. Contact us the moment you receive one so the reply is never rushed or late.
